Highlighted Project

Description: Community Development through Agricultural Innovation and Social Reintegration
Location: Municipality of Puerto Gaitán, Meta Department, Colombia
Project Host: Corporación Promotores de Paz (CORPROPAZ)

The project creates an environment for the reintegration of people affected by the conflict in Colombia by establishing an agricultural industrial park, including biofuel and food crop development, with a sustainable village to provide quality jobs, housing, and other services in a rural environment to create employment, as well as economic and social stability, which will have a social, economic, and environmental impact for the wellbeing of the population.

The current problem is the post conflict situation that has arisen from the demobilization of armed groups, as well as military personnel that leave the armed forces yearly, and the vulnerable population affected by the conflict. There is a lack of adequate jobs and training, especially in the rural areas, to help these populations reintegrate into the communities.

The project involves a wide variety of stakeholders, including: officers, non-commissioned officers, soldiers and policemen, both with incapacities and without them, that leave service (up to 13,000 professionals and 100,000 regulars annually); demobilized guerrillas of the conflict willing to accept reintegration (57,000); displaced people due to violence  (of which there are 4,800,000 nation-wide; Indigenous Peoples (9,593 in Meta Department); as well as, small rural population groups living in the area of the project location.

CORPROPAZ has developed this project with extensive Colombian government support, including the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the Armed Forces, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Mines and Energy, the governor of Meta Department, and the mayor of Puerto Gaitán.

DI is assisting with the development of this project in conjunction with its associate organization, the Colombo American Information Office.
